In a couple days in the Lunar New Years, which I consider similar to Christmas because of the change in atmosphere, and the traditions that follow both holidays. For both holidays, treating others respectfully is encouraged and respected, and both traditions include spending time with families. However, after reading more about the Lunar New Years, I learned many new interesting facts such as the many different symbols of Tet that include the Vietnamese Peach Blossoms, Banh Cung, and Xin Xam. It is interesting to me that Banh Cung has to be square because my mom has always made Banh Cung as a cylinder. Also, I didn't realize that it was tradition to do Xin Xam because I have always done Xin Xam every time I go to the temple.
Another fact that I found interesting is that people have to hide their cleaning items such as a broomstick for the New Year. I have heard of people not sweeping the house for the new years because of the fear of sweeping away good luck. I guess they have to hide the cleaning items in case the young children might get a hold of the cleaning items.
I thought it was interesting that people hid their cleaning items too. That's pretty extreme!
ReplyDeleteI did xin xam once and I think I "picked" a good stick but I don't remember. It's pretty interesting to go to chua and see everyone doing it.
ReplyDeletei've never even heard of cleaning up the house until i watched the movie! the vietnamese tradition is pretty fun
ReplyDeleteOne time I đi Xin Xam and I got a bad stick... My mom told me to redo it and I felt like I cheated destiny.
ReplyDeletehahaha the first stick counts, not the second one, sorry Vu.
ReplyDeleteI feel like my family doesn't do much of the tet customs and traditions besides from eating banh cung and what not lol
ReplyDeleteMình cũng nghĩ Tết giống như lễ Giáng Sinh vậy.
ReplyDeleteI've only been to the temple a few times but I have never gotten to đi xim xam.
ReplyDeleteI think it's cool to think of Tết kind of like Christmas...my mom always says that we should get a week off for Tết :)
ReplyDeleteI think the different understanding of Tet from Vietnamese and Koreans would be another challenge that many Vietnamese&Korean couples have to overcome. On new year's, Koreans eat a lot and constantly clean.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there would be a problem with kids trying to take the cleaning items in my house haha (we're way too messy)
